With a script that needs no doctoring, and songs your kids will learn faster than you can teach, Check Out That Star provides you with a high quality musical that will have “Ev’rybody’s Bonkers!”
Happy Valley has fallen under a black cloud. O’Hare Epstein-Barr, the meanest woman in town, is taking down all the Christmas decorations. But in one funny, crazy dream, O’Hare discovers that Christmas is wonderful when we open our hearts to receive God’s free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Contains original and familiar Christmas songs in unison and 2-part voicings.

Check Out That Star

Buckle up – this isn’t a run-of-the-mill kids’ musical! It’s packed with wildly eccentric characters, laugh-out-loud clever banter, and quotable zingers that hook everyone from tots to grandparents. The tunes are total earworms – you’ll be humming them days later, no escape! Kids go nuts for Rainwater songs, memorizing them faster than you can say “encore.” With a variety of styles from classic traditional rock, foot-stomping rock, vaudeville flair, jazzy grooves, and delightfully ditzy ditties!

Light up your church choir, school crew, or community gang with the one-of-a-kind Rainwater musical magic! Our ragtag bunch of hilarious characters will have kids and grown-ups giggling at their antics and razor-sharp wit. But peek under the laughs, and you’ll find pure gold – touching Bible truths and the life-changing news of salvation through Christ.

Hop aboard this giggle-packed adventure, diving into faith, friendship, and fresh starts via super-catchy (and gloriously “un-kid-show”) songs and riveting tales!

Your guests will leave buzzing with joy, and God’s love will sneak right into their hearts like the best kind of surprise party!

Perfect for:

  • Church choirs looking for fresh, fun ideas
  • School groups seeking creative outreach events

CAST OF CHARACTERS

O’Hare: A Cruella DeVil type of character at the start, but by the end softens up and has a change of
heart to the point of sharing Jesus’ love with all. Must be able to scratch and sneeze in a crazy
manner. Solos: Her only solos are spoken ones, however she may sing the second verse of
“Little Baby In a Manger” or either of the verses of “Catch a Glimpse.”

Norma Gene: Heaven’s cutest, smallest, and feistiest angel ever! Stands up to O’ Hare but gets real worried
when things aren’t going as planned.

Jordan: Heaven’s nicest angel. Never fear when Jordan’s here. Always has his head together. Must
have a good sense of timing. Has one spoken solo in “It ‘s Herod. ” (Can be played by a girl
with a name change.)

Herod: The Whiner of Whiners. Strong character with the ability to change emotions at will. Can sing
the short solo in “Check Out That Star” or pantomime the part while another soloist sings it.

Innkeeper: Has to deal with all the nuts who come to the Inn. Must be sensitive and sometimes frustrated.

Herder #1: Generic, excitable type of character.

Herder #2: Must be able to talk with a real sloppy lisp.

Three Kings: Though the Kings have no names, each must have a definite personality. Each person must
have good timing to play off of each other and an ability to ad lib while looking for a star that
isn’t there. These parts can be played by girls if not enough boys are available. The Kings sing
together in “Check Out That Star” or can pantomime while another soloist sings.

Mary: She wears the pants in the family, even though she’s large with child.

Joseph: A desperate dude! Anxious to find a place for Mary to have Jesus.

Maggie: A giving girl with a big heart.

Beverly: A poor girl with a bright personality.

Jason: Maggie’s brother. Although small, he stands up to O’ Hare, both in a confronting and loving
manner.

NON-SPEAKING PARTS:

Scribes: Should be a bunch of boys who are dressed like Aladdin. They run out in “Check Out That
Star” and say “Hey” in time. They also can sing together the short scribe solo, “It is
Bethlehem …,” or the choir can sing as they unfurl the scroll. They also appear with horns and
scroll in “Where Was He Born?”

Angels: Though non-speaking parts, if used properly these characters will think they’re the stars of the
show. You can use them in “The Shepherd’s Song,” “Where Was He Born?” “We Need a
Savior” and “Little Baby In a Manger.” There is no limit to how many angels you could have.
Six to twelve is probably the best number.

Cool Cat: A boy or girl who is real cool. Decked out with sunglasses, a cool hat and leather clothes, this
character can be extremely fun and funny.

Helpers: Kids who work making the Nativity and bringing in various props for it.

Carolers: Three to six kids who come out during “It’s Christmas Time” and sing the short “It’s
Christmas, Christmas.” They then join the workers at the Nativity.

Chorus: Should dress as characters of the living Nativity in various Bible costumes (mainly shepherd-type
clothes).
