Summary:

King Herod’s palace is buzzing with excitement! Scribbles the Scribe is searching the scriptures for salvation when three Magi appear looking for the new King of the Jews. As the Magi hit the road to Bethlehem, Scribbles follows hoping the Magi will lead him to the Messiah.
According to Good News Reviews, “The songs are some of the best, period! Melodies are enjoyable, singable, catchy and infectious, the kind you’ll find yourself humming later…The meaningful story combines the spiritual, the historical, and some of the hysterical. Amidst all the songs and humor we hear about the specific prophecies concerning the Messiah, as well as learning of God’s great love for us.”

“The Not-So-Silent Night!” will delight all ages with hope, love, grace, humor, and biblical truth through zany characters like Scribbles the Scribe, Grovel, King Herod, Nook & Cranny, orphans Robin & Willie, the Magi, and more. Catchy songs span traditional, rock, vaudeville, jazz, and whimsical styles—including We Work For the King, Hard Headed Herod, Unroll the Scroll, The Last Chance for Gas Oasis – this is a wonderful opportunity to support families, friends, & church, or the home school community.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Performance time: Approx. 44 minutes
F
or Ages: 6-18
Speaking Parts: 17
Soloists: Herod, Grovel, Scribbles, Robin, Jeanette, the Magi (group solo).
Costumes: Biblical characters, Oasis workers (gas station attendants), Scribes, Magi, King Herod.
Necessary Props:
Scribbles: A clay pot filled with scrolls. There should be one scroll, when rolled out, is extremely long and covers most of the stage for the song “Unroll the Scroll”.
Nook, Cranny and Scribes: Brooms, feather dusters, mops, spray bottles, etc., for cleaning the palace.
Herod: A sword and gift box. These may be handed to him when needed by one of the scribes.
Magi: Their three gifts for Jesus. What works great is a bag of Potpourri, a 4” to 5” plastic jar filled with gold glitter and a tall slim decorative bottle used for oil and vinegar dressings. All should have gift bows or ribbons attached.
Jeanette: A flashlight or an upright feather duster with yellow or orange feathers handed to her by Willie when he says the line “bring a torch, Jeanette”… This prop is not necessary but is a cute addition.
Robin: A flute or small recorder. She should have a place to carry it at all times so it isn’t awkward.
Willie: A small drum that attaches around his neck; 2 drum sticks or mallets.
Mary and Joseph: A baby doll wrapped up in a blanket and a Manger.
Other Props: King Herod’s throne.* Sunglasses for everybody but Herod on “Where Is…50’s.” Suitcases or duffle bags for the “Last Chance” scene. * – A throne can be created from a normal chair by taking shiny material and attaching it properly with safety pins.
Set:
Scene 1: King Herod’s Palace.
A couple of urns and or pillars with material draped from one side to the other are all you need.
Scene 2: The Last Chance for Gas Oasis.
There are many ways to depict this scene. You can be elaborate and paint a backdrop that looks like a middle-eastern scene with a hotel and/or gas station. To be simple, just use some fake palm trees or other traditional oasis type of decorations.
Scene 3: The Stable in Bethlehem:
The title says it all. The scene should look like the inside of a stable. Make it simple with a few old boards crossing and nailed together at the ends or add a small roof and sides. Lattice panels also make a great backdrop.

Example stage setup: This sample image shows one possible way to stage the musical. Use it as a visual reference and adapt it to fit your available space, cast size, and production needs.
