Samson – Christian Musical for Kids and Teens

Perfect for:

  • Church choirs looking for fresh, fun ideas
  • School groups seeking creative outreach events
  • Community organizations wanting to bring people together

DESCRIPTION:

God promises a childless couple they will give birth to a Hebrew Hero, who will clobber their enemies, the Philistines. So Samson is tricked by Delilah, an enemy spy, and locked up. A prisoner in a Philistine jail, Samson finally prays for the strength to “Bring Down the House” on his captors.

With an exceptionally clever script, Samson has lots of humor and is packed full of spiritual lessons. The most valuable lesson learned is that we should never turn our back on God or he may take away our greatest strength. He can restore us though, if we seek Him again. Ten catchy original songs fully orchestrated using live brass and woodwinds displays an incredible array of musical styles.

This musical was in the top three best selling Children’s musicals in the country when it was first published. Memorable songs like “Samson’s Deeds”, “Great Things for God” and “Don’t it Make You Wanna Praise Him?” are a delightful blend to make “Samson” a perfect production! Many have asked “how can you possibly tell the story of Samson with a kid’s musical?” Come and find out for yourself and be utterly astounded!

Samson

Forget the predictable kids' show formula! Samson delivers a cast you won't see coming, rapid-fire comic moments, and lines that stick with the whole family long after the curtain call. The music lodges in your head for days - Rainwater tunes are that singable, and young performers lock them in with surprising speed. Expect a lively mix of traditional, rock, vaudeville, jazz, and playful musical color!

Give your church choir, school troupe, or community players a production that entertains and matters. Side-splitting characters and sharp humor keep every age engaged, while the story carries real weight: biblical truth and the hope of restoration through Christ.

Dive into courage, weakness, and God's renewing strength through songs that won't quit and storytelling that holds attention from start to finish!

Guests leave smiling - and the gospel quietly takes root where it counts.

Seize this chance to proclaim God's love and leave an impression that lasts!

SAMSON

Performance time: Approx. 45 minutes
For Ages: 6-18
Speaking Parts: 18
Soloists: Samson, Delilah, Mom.
Costumes: Choir: Since the choir is a modern day kids choir and is the audience to the story, no costumes should be used. What would work the best is: (1) T-shirts that are uniform for each child. Contact us about Samson shirts that have the picture as it is shown on the front cover of the book. All of the text is eliminated except the title, "Samson." Prices will vary depending upon the quantity, but they are reasonably priced. (2) Varied solid colored T-shirts; royal blue, Kelly green, pink, bright yellow and purple are a great combination. These could be combined with blue denim shorts or pants and white or blue shoes. Girls should wear colorful ribbons and bows in their hair. Standard biblical costumes for bible characters. Flower Petal Girls: A ready-made leotard is decorated with petal-shaped sheer nylon strips edged with a Serger machine finish. Delilah: A harem outfit. Director: A blouse or turtleneck, vest, knickers, plaid kneesocks and a jockey cap. Soldiers: Armor. Narrator: White long-sleeved blouse and black slacks. A hat that drapes over the back and ties at the neck. Angel: Angel outfit with long sleeves and angel wings.
Necessary Props: Narrator: A book to hold during the first song. Director: A music stand and a conductor's baton. Angel: A loose halo that sits on top of his (or her) head that will sit on the forehead above the eyebrows. A doll wrapped up in a blanket. The angel presents this baby to Mom and Dad during the narration that refers to this. Mom: A chair or small stool. A small rolling pin or wooden spoon to shake at Samson. Granny glasses and a grey Grandma wig to wear once Samson is grown up. Optional - something to knit while sitting. Dad: Optional - A scroll to roll back and forth to check the Angel's prophesies. A Grandpa wig. Samson: A wig that doesn't look feminine. To accomplish this, sew two short wigs together and tie a rope around the front of the forehead. A drink tray with plastic glasses taped to it. Sunglasses - you know when he needs to wear them! Delilah: Most of Delilah's props can be brought in by the Soldiers or are already in place in a pre-set scene. First is a table. On the table is a soft rope with seven cords of a rope tied together long enough to tie around Samson's wrists. A new (non abrasive) soft rope long enough to tie around Samson's arms and chest a few times. A loom (see video for help on how to make a simple loom). An electric razor. A chair or stool to sit on in front of the table. Shiloh: A rope tied cloth bag of coins to bring to Delilah. Rulers, Soldiers and Delilah: Umbrellas. They should lay behind the pillars, and each character should know where to find one when the pillars fall. You may wish to have every other person have one. Flower Petal Chorus Dancers: Baskets with flower petals or cut cloth (works best) petals to throw in the first song. Stage props: Two pillars. Foam stones (rocks or bricks) to sit on top of a Styrofoam top that extends over the pillars.

SAMSON

Set: No sets are needed. However, if you wish to create them, suggestions are given in the script at the beginning of each new scene. To get a more vivid idea of all the props and sets, the video gives a comprehensive look and guide on how to create and find all of them. Stage is set with two four-sided flats, the size of refrigerator cartons. These cartons enable us to change scenes swiftly, as they are painted to represent each locale. The first panel on each of the two cartons is decorated with cartoon-like flowers and animals, all smiling very sweetly, as if we landed in "Toon-land."

Example stage setup: This sample image shows one possible way to stage the musical. Use it as a visual reference and adapt it to fit your available space, cast size, and production needs.
